Sleep deprivation is one of the leading causes of truck accidents. Sleep deprivation changes a driver’s brain chemistry and medical studies show that truckers routinely suffer from ‘microsleeps’ caused by excessive driving in order to meet delivery schedules. The FMCSR’s prohibit fatigued driving, but companies often put profit and delivery schedules ahead of safety.
Truck accidents involve unique issues and may also be caused by truck drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, fail to brake correctly, refuse to allow another vehicle to merge, drive too fast for conditions, or swing too wide when making turns. Truck drivers can also cause accidents when they shed tires or other objects on the road, drive a load that is too big or heavy, drive a load that is improperly secured, fail to properly inspect tires, brakes, and lights, or are driving defective or poorly maintained rigs.
